De Quervain’s tenosynovitis
What is it?
Inflammation of the sheath surrounding the tendons of the abductor longus and extensor pollicis brevis of the thumb (tenosynovitis), which both run in the same « fibrous tunnel »
at the outer edge of the wrist, in contact with the radius.
A mechanical pain (during movement) and/or swelling on the inner edge of the wrist at the base of the thumb and not far from the styloid of the wrist
It is essentially a professional disease which concerns all activities requiring the use of the thumb in a precise and/or energetic way. There is a strong influence of gender (often 3 women for 1 man), age (>40 years), and work position.
